Possess Peace

“A man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” Luke 12:15

Unchecked materialism becomes your master, both when you make the purchase and when you must sweat to maintain it. That’s why I heartily encourage you to decide together to own less… and enjoy life more.

Just between us…

  • What do we have that we don’t need and could simply give or throw away?
  • What guidelines could we agree on to avoid the trap of materialism?
  • How can fewer possessions bring us closer to God?

Dear Lord, we are so easily driven by the desire to own more things. We want to live with less. Change us with Your truth about lasting value. We want to hold all our income and possessions in trust for You, the real owner. Amen.

It has been said that every possession we have imprisons us. And while none of us want to, or should live in a cardboard box, humans generally equate possessions with safety, happiness and security. Nothing could be further from the truth when it comes to true safety, happiness and security.

Our possessions may keep us out of the rain, separated from intruders and may provide us with some gratification. However, true happiness, eternal security and safety will come only from within, the result of spiritual possessions.

Those spiritual possessions are gifts from God. Such things as tolerance, patience, forbearance and charity . They do not arise from material goods, but from God’s grace given freely to those who will obey. They produce the faith, hope, love, joy and peace that will provide us with everything we truly need to possess.

Now, those are possessions worth valuing…and worshipping.

Possess peace,

SEEK MY FACE

SEEK MY FACE, and you will find not only My Presence but also My Peace. To receive My Peace, you must change your grasping, controlling stance to one of openness and trust. Ask My Spirit within you to order your day and control your thoughts, for the mind controlled by the Spirit is Life and Peace.

You can have as much of Me and My Peace as you want, through thousands of  correct choices each day. The most persistent choice you face is whether to trust Me or to worry. You will never run out of things to worry about, but you can choose to trust Me no matter what. I am an ever-present help in trouble. Trust Me, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea .

Psalm 46:1-2          God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea.

I will sing to my Lord as long as I live, I will sing

praise to my God while I have my being.

To paraphrase Shakespeare, “To trust, or to worry?’ that is the question. Other questions just as important are “To grasp and control, or to be open and to trust?’ These are the questions we face each moment of our lives. The decisions we make regarding those questions will determine whether we live in peace or in worry. The key to this is to seek God’s presence and to give God’s spirit  control over our thoughts, priorities and our decisions. This of course is difficult and requires us to be open to and trust God’s will, God’s power and God’s desire for our best good.

This one thing I know, that God is always there with abundant strength to help us in times of trouble. I know this from thousands of personal experiences in which trusting God provided the only help that would save me. Even though with all my grasping and controlling, my earth had given way and my mountains had fallen into the heart of my sea. Even then, openness to God’s spirit, and trust in God’s power protected me and lifted me up with the peace that surpasses all understanding.

In the refuge,
