I had an amusing experience when I first came to America. Passing an attractive-looking restaurant, I went inside, and selecting a table, sat down and waited. Nothing happened. I continued to wait. All around me, people were enjoying their food, and only I was left out. After a while the truth dawned on me; I was in a cafeteria.(This system had not yet made its appearance in England.) I then realized that while there was plenty of food to be obtained, one had to go forward and claim it for oneself, or go without.
The universe is run exactly on the lines of a cafeteria. Unless you claim “mentally” what you want, you may sit and wait forever.
Every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat. (Isaiah 55:1).
How do we “mentally” claim something. In short, it is in how we truly see ourselves. Do we see ourselves as deserving, happy people on the road to success and peace. Or, in our core, do we see ourselves as flawed, anxious and small creatures getting by from day to day.
If we are to follow the teaching of the Bible, then we can not see ourselves in the latter light. Jesus, the prophets and all the wisdom of the Bible tells us we are children of God, made in God’s image and endowed with the power to be gods. When we judge ourselves by embracing a poor self image, we are defying God’s will and in fact the entire scheme of creation.
That is not to say we are perfect. We are not. We are however, capable of, and created to be, the temple (residence) of God’s Holy Spirit. So, even in the midst of our worst mistakes and shortcomings, we are loved by the creator of the universe. And we are obliged to love and respect ourselves and our potential for carrying out God’s will here below.
When we claim our kinship to God, then we also claim God’s grace, love and forgiveness. We can not hate ourselves and love God. We can not believe we are wretched little beings and believe that we are created by God. And, we can not live in anxiety, fear and insecurity and abide in the garden God created for us.
Each of us is a divine creation, loved by God and redeemed by Jesus. When we choose to accept ourselves as children of God, then we mentally claim our birthright to joy, peace and hope.
Now, let us go out into the world and into the deepest recesses of our soul and claim the water that quenches all thirst and the bread of everlasting life so that we think, feel act as children of God.
Let it be,
Z gardener
