What has your religion done for you? For years probably, you have been attending church, reading spiritual books, studying the Bible. Now I suggest that you have a spiritual stocktaking. Ask yourself what difference religion has made in your life, in your home, in your affairs. How much peace of mind has it given you? How much courage? How much understanding? How much opportunity for service? For, make no mistake, real religion does give all these things.
If your spiritual stocktaking does not turn out to be satisfactory, I believe that you will find the explanation to lie in the following law: What you put into your religion, that you get out of it.
If you put in 5 percent of yourself, you will receive a 5 percent dividend or demonstration. If you put in 20 percent of yourself, you will receive a 20 percent demonstration. Complete returns call for a 100 percent investment.
Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might… (Ecclesiastes 9:10).
“That which you sew, so shall you reap”. We have all heard this, and we should know that it especially applies to our religious life. Just as successful marriages are built on both partners giving 100 percent, so our religious development requires that we give 100 percent. There is no way around this truth. Daily prayer, constant awareness of God’s presence, subjecting our decisions to God’s will and thinking as God would have us think requires focused effort and must be applied with discipline it we are to receive the full benefits of a religious life.
In order to manifest these things in our lives, we must make a commitment and then follow it with consistent action. When we do this we will not only get back what we put into it, but will receive multiples of what we put in. Just as one seed when planted and nurtured, bears much more fruit and many more seeds, the seeds of religion that we plant in our lives will bring a much greater return that that which we invested. In fact, it will yield an entire garden that we will inhabit in peace and joy. If our gardens aren’t filled with the fruits of peace and joy, then we may need to put more effort into our gardening.
